VOC Emissions

House

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are carbon-containing chemical compounds that readily evaporate into the atmosphere, potentially damaging the ozone layer. Common examples of VOC-emitting products include gasoline, mineral spirits, alcohol, nail polish and paint. The large industry and transportation sectors are responsible for the majority of VOC emissions, and lawmakers have been regulating VOC emissions from these sources for many years. Lawmakers have recently regulated smaller sources as well, including paint and coating manufacturers.

While California was the first state to pass regulations limiting VOC content in paints and coatings, other states have done the same.  These standards are driven through a multi-state organization called the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC).  To date, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia have either enacted, or are in the process of implementing, new VOC standards to limit VOC levels in consumer products.

It’s important to note that the VOC regulations do not prohibit the use of oil-based products, only those manufactured with solvents containing a high level of VOCs.  With the WOODguard® line, there’s no concern about VOCs, nor has there ever been.  All WOODguard products easily meet current standards for VOC content, and ISK Biocides, Inc. is committed to providing our customers with products that both protect the environment and preserve nature’s beauty.  In fact, long before VOC compliance became an industry issue, our products offered some of the lowest VOC levels.
